A focus on our Environment

Reflecting its concern for the environment, Molson leads the brewing industry in taking responsible action. Molson believes that we can successfully navigate the path to a cleaner and safer environment by involving all the stakeholders, including government, business and individual citizens.

At Molson, we are committed to do our part, and help make Canada a cleaner and healthier place. Here are some of our recycling initiatives, which are industry-leading for packaged goods:

  • We support convenient recycling through our retail outlets, so that 98% of Molson Breweries bottles and 83% of cans are returned to points of sale by consumers. Our cardboard packaging is also accepted.
  • All returned materials are either reused or recycled. Each year this diverts many tons of glass, aluminum and corrugated cardboard from landfills.
  • Molson bottles are reused 15-20 times, after which they are sold to glass manufacturers.
  • The loops holding six-pack cans together are bio-degradable. The loops are easily broken so small animals can't become ensnared in them.

Molson targets environmental efficiency at every stage of the brewing process:

  • During the brewing process, no harmful chemicals are released into the air or water.
  • Carbon dioxide released during fermentation is collected and reused in the carbonation process.
  • Liquid waste contains no toxins; it is treated before being released so it is harmless to the environment.
  • Spent grains are sold to local farmers for livestock feed or fertilizer.
  • All Molson offices throughout Canada practice recycling programs for glass, cans and fine paper.
